Solar Panels & Energy Storage

A future-proof energy solution has been realized at Freesia de Heufkens, consisting of floating solar panels combined with a battery energy storage system (ESS). This integrated installation enables the company to make its energy consumption more sustainable, bypass grid congestion, and actively contribute to the energy transition.

The water basin has been optimally utilized for floating solar panels. 444 panels have been placed on the existing basin, accounting for 286 kWp of installed capacity. The floating construction not only ensures efficient use of space but also contributes to reducing algae growth through shading, which has a positive impact on water quality.

To store the surplus solar energy locally, a storage system of 5 ESS units of 215 kWh each was chosen, together providing a total capacity of 1.3 MWh (100% DoD). This scalable energy storage allows Freesia de Heufkens to dampen peak loads, maximize self-consumption, and potentially participate in grid balancing in the future.
