Solar Panels, Energy Storage & Charging
At Taurus Europe B.V. in Hoofddorp, Bata Energy Solutions implemented a fully integrated energy system for a new distribution building. The challenge was unique: the premises have a grid connection of only 3×80A, while the building must remain continuously operational and also houses charging infrastructure for its own staff.
To make this possible, Bata designed a system in which generation, storage, charging, and energy management work together as a single unit. 668 solar panels were installed on the roof with a total capacity of 304 kWp. Two battery systems of 215 kWh each combine to form a 430 kWh energy storage system, with a charging and discharging capacity of 215 kW. At night, the battery charges via the grid. During the day, the building runs on solar power, supplemented by stored energy when necessary.
Four double charging stations with a capacity of 22 kW per station are part of the system. An EMS continuously monitors the available capacity on the main distribution board and scales back or shuts down the charging stations when the load threatens to become too high. Through a link with the building management system, internal systems are also switched off where necessary. In this way, the building’s entire energy management is actively controlled within the limits of the small grid connection.
The result is a distribution building that is fully operational without waiting for an expansion of the grid connection. This is a solution that is becoming increasingly relevant now that grid congestion in the Netherlands poses a real obstacle for growing companies when opening new locations.
