Kompany commissions 1.5 MWh battery system at Fresh Park Venlo

A 1.5 MWh battery storage system has been commissioned at the Kompany cooperative site in Venlo. The system consists of seven Huawei LUNA2000 modules of 215 kWh each and was supplied and installed by Bata Energy Solutions from Lienden. The overall control is managed by Enova, a specialist in energy management and battery control.


The battery serves two functions simultaneously. Firstly, the system extends the use of Kompany’s own solar power. Energy generated during the day that is not immediately required is stored and used by the company at a later time. Additionally, the battery provides flexibility to the power grid, thereby contributing to resolving grid congestion in the region.


The investment was made possible through the European SIG&F subsidy (Sectoral Intervention Fruit and Vegetables), which supports recognized producer organizations in investments for energy conservation, sustainable generation, and storage.


Lower footprint, less grey power
For Kompany, the battery aligns with an ongoing initiative focused on self-generation and reducing the footprint of fresh produce. With on-site storage, solar power generated during the day can be utilized for internal processes over a much larger part of the day. Dependence on purchasing power during hours when the sun is not shining decreases, and with it, the share of grey power in the final product.

Consultancy, engineering, and installation by Bata
Bata Energy Solutions managed the entire process from consultancy and engineering to delivery and installation. This was based on an analysis of the on-site consumption profile, the capacity of the existing grid connection, and the integration with the existing solar installation. Based on this, a system was designed that combines self-generation and grid interaction in a single operation. Furthermore, the modular design allows for the storage capacity to be expanded at a later stage without requiring changes to the foundation or the overall design.

Control by Enova
The battery is controlled by Enova, which has been active in energy management for over twenty years in sectors including greenhouse horticulture, logistics with cold storage, and industry. The energy manager and the EMS (energy management system) work together to achieve maximum results from the system. The Enova platform continuously processes data from the battery, self-generation, and surrounding energy markets. Based on this, the system automatically switches between charging and discharging, tailored to Kompany’s consumption profile, price formation on Day-Ahead and Intraday markets, and calls from balancing markets such as aFRR. In this way, the available capacity of the connection is optimized, and the battery provides flexibility back to the grid when it is not being used for internal consumption.

Collaboration
The project demonstrates how three specialized parties complement each other. Kompany provides the practical demand and its position as a producer organization. Bata Energy Solutions provides the expertise and execution regarding storage and grid connection. Enova adds software-based control and grid interaction. Together, they have created a system that goes beyond mere storage and contributes to a more stable power grid.
